Белгород

Белгород — экономический и культурный центр Бел­городской области. Расположен на р. Северский Донец, в узле железных дорог Москва—Харьков и Купянск — Брянск, в 695 км от Москвы. На 1 января 1988г.— 299,1 тыс. жителей (в 1939 г. — 34 тыс., в 1959 — 72 тыс., в 1970 — 240 тыс.). С 1973 г. в Белгороде два района: Октябрьский и Свердловский.
В X веке в верховьях Северского Донца пролегала восточная граница Киевской Руси, позже — южный ру­беж Московского государства. Летом 1596 г. (по другим источникам — 1593) на Белой горе заложили крепость, ставшую центром Белгородской оборонитель­ной черты. Эта дата считается годом основания го­рода. Город дважды переносился с места на место, на нынешнем месте обосновался только в 1650 г. С 1681 г. белгородским воеводой являлся Б. П. Шереметев (жил в Курске). Под его водительством Белгородский полк совершил ряд успешных походов против крымских татар. Белгородские полки — пехотный и драгунский — уча­ствовали в Полтавской битве. Петр I, направляясь под Полтаву, останавливался в Белгороде.
В 1727 г. была создана Белгородская губер­ния. В нее, кроме Белгорода, вошли еще 33 города: Брянск, Валуйки, Курск, Мценск, Обоянь, Орел, Путивль, Рыльск, Суджа, Чугуев и другие. После упразднения гу­бернии в 1779 г. Белгород перешел в разряд уездных городов. В 1785 г. — после ликвидации Крымского ханст­ва — он перестал считаться и крепостью.
На мелких полукустарных предприятиях Белгорода вырабатывали в XVIII—XIX вв. мел, известь, кирпич, селитру, вытапливали воск. Заметные перемены в эконо­мической и социальной жизни города произошли в связи со строительством железных дорог: Курск—Харьков (1869 г.), Белгород — Волчанск (1896 г.), Белгород — Сумы (1901 г.).
В годы первой российской революции 1905—1907 гг. в Белгороде активно действовала большевистская группа РСДРП, возникшая вскоре после II съезда партии, в 1904 г. она возглавила выступления рабочих железнодо­рожного узла, которых поддержал пролетариат соседнего Харькова. В июле 1917 г. создан городской комитет РСДРП (б).
Советская власть в Белгороде была провозглашена 26 октября (8 ноября) 1917 г. В декабре 1917 г. под Белгородом Петроградский сводный полк, сводный от­ряд солдат и рабочих из Харькова и отряд черноморских моряков, присланные на помощь, плечом к плечу с ме­стными красногвардейцами и воинами расквартирован­ного в городе Польского запасного полка разбили удар­ные батальоны контрреволюции. Осенью 1918 г. в тех же местах были повернуты вспять немецко-гайдамацкие части. 19 ноября 1919 г. под Белгородом в слободе Великомихайловке произошло организационное оформление Первой Конной армии.
К 1926 г. промышленность Белгорода достигла дово­енного уровня. В третьей пятилетке в городе началось сооружение котлостроительного завода, появились новые учебные заведения, больницы, ширилось строительство жилья.
С начала Великой Отечественной войны в Белгоро­де формировалась и в августе 1941 г. была отправлена на фронт 299-я стрелковая дивизия. Захватив город (24 октября 1941 г.), гитлеровцы установили жестокий оккупационный режим. 6 февраля 1942 г. они расстре­ляли на берегу Северского Донца две тысячи мирных жителей. В Белгороде действовало антифашистское подполье, а в окрестностях города — партизаны. 9 фев­раля 1943 г. во время Харьковской наступательной опе­рации советские войска освободили Белгород. Но 18 мар­та были вынуждены вновь его оставить.
В июле—августе 1943 г. под Белгородом происходили главные сражения Курской битвы, в том числе Прохоровское танковое сражение. 5 августа 1943 г. в Москве был дан первый в истории Советских Вооружен­ных Сил салют — в честь освобождения Белгорода и Орла. Двум стрелковым дивизиям и авиационному пол­ку было присвоено почетное наименование «Белгород­ские». В день освобождения в Белгороде осталось всего 150 жителей, остальных фашисты угнали на работы в Германию или уничтожили. Город превратился в раз­валины: были разрушены все промышленные предприя­тия, железнодорожный узел, культурно-бытовые учреж­дения.
В сентябре 1943 г. население Белгорода составляло уже более 8 тыс. жителей. Началось восстановление го­рода. Указом Президиума Верховного Совета СССР от 9 апреля 1980 г. за мужество и стойкость, проявленные трудящимися города в годы Великой Отечественной войны, и за успехи, достигнутые в хозяйственном и куль­турном строительстве, г. Белгород награжден орденом Отечественной войны I степени.
Белгород — промышленный город, в 1988 г. на долю его 56 предприятий приходилась почти треть промыш­ленной продукции области. Наиболее крупные пред­приятия Белгорода — ордена Трудового Красного Зна­мени комбинат асбестоцементных изделий, производст­венное объединение «Белгородский завод энергетическо­го машиностроения», ордена Трудового Красного Знаме­ни цементный завод, витаминный комбинат им. 50-летия СССР, завод «Авторемгормаш», слюдяная фабрика им. 60-летия Ленинского комсомола, комбинат стройма­териалов, ТЭЦ, завод металлоконструкций, завод по переработке пластмасс, ремонтно-механический завод, завод лимонной кислоты, железнодорожный узел и ло­комотивное депо. Строительная индустрия представлена Всесоюзным объединением «Центротяжстрой», домо­строительным комбинатом, трестами КМАстроймеханизация, КМАспецстрой, КМАэлектромонтаж, Белгород-промстрой.
Белгород — центр крупнейшего в стране железоруд­ного бассейна. Территориально-производственный ком­плекс на базе КМА обслуживают почти сорок заводов и организаций города. Важную роль в изучении и освое­нии богатств КМА играют научно-исследовательские и проектные институты ВИОГЕМ и Центрогипроруда и филиал института Механобрчермет. Всего в Белгоро­де — более 20 научно-исследовательских и проектных институтов.
Подготовка специалистов ведется в Белгородском педагогическом институте им. М. С. Ольминского, Бел­городском технологическом институте строительных ма­териалов им. И. А. Гришманова, Белгородском сель­скохозяйственном институте (учебно-научный центр по сельскому хозяйству), в Белгородском кооперативном институте Центросоюза, Белгородском территориальном факультете Всесоюзного ордена «Знак Почета» заочного финансово-экономического института, в 'белгородских индустриальном, строительном и механико-технологическом техникумах, в Белгородском городском медицинском училище имени Е. В. Виноградской и медучилище орде­на Ленина Южной железной дороги, в культурно-про­светительном, двух педагогических и музыкальном учи­лищах. Квалифицированных рабочих готовят восемь профессионально-технических училищ. В городе 41 днев­ная, 9 вечерних и заочных общеобразовательных и 6 му­зыкальных школ. В учебных заведениях Белгорода в 1988 г. обучалось более 50 тыс. студентов и учащихся.
Книжный фонд Белгородской областной научной би­блиотеки превышает 800 тыс. экземпляров. Объединен­ная централизованная городская библиотека им. Н. Ост­ровского и 18 ее филиалов располагают почти 675 тыс. книг. В городе работают также областная юношеская библиотека (83 тыс. книг) и областная детская библи­отека им. А. П. Гайдара (160 тыс. книг).
К услугам белгородцев — областной драматический театр им. М. С. Щепкина и областной театр кукол, пять кинотеатров, семь Дворцов и Домов культуры, краевед­ческий и художественный музеи, Дворец спорта «Кос­мос» и Дворец физкультуры и спорта «Спартак», стади­он завода «Энергомаш», городской парк культуры и от­дыха им. В. И. Ленина.
В Белгородской областной типографии им. В. И. Ле­нина печатаются журнал «Политическая агитация», две областные, несколько многотиражных газет и районная газета «Знамя» — орган Белгородского райкома КПСС и районного Совета народных депутатов. (Газета вы­ходит с сентября 1920 г., долгое время называлась «Кол­хозное слово», в 1960-е гг. получила нынешнее название, объем — 1 печ. л., тираж в 1988 г. — 10,7 тыс. экз.)
В городе — 89 магазинов пищеторга, 32 — горплодо-овощторга, 46 — горпромторга, 8 — облкниготорга, 10— коопторга. Наиболее крупные из них: универмаги «Бел­город» и «Детский мир», гастроном «Центральный», фирменные магазины «Белгородец», «Океан», «Топаз», «Книжный мир», «Подписные издания», «Старая книга», «Тысяча мелочей», «Кооператор».
В 1980 г. на северной окраине Белгорода было за­вершено сооружение нового аэропорта. Воздушный транспорт связывает Белгород с крупнейшими городами страны, доставляет пассажиров в районные центры об­ласти. В 1984 г. было построено новое здание автовок­зала.
