Губкин

Губкин — город, центр Губкинского района, желез­нодорожная станция на линии Старый Оскол — Ржава. 76,3 тыс. жителей (1988 г.).
В 1930-е гг. в окрестностях деревень Коробково и Салтыкове развернулось массовое бурение глубоких скважин, было открыто Коробковское месторождение железных руд Курской магнитной аномалии и вскоре заложена первая разведочно-эксплуатационная шахта. Началось строительство поселка, 19 сентября 1939 г. он был отнесен к категории рабочих и ему присвоено имя академика Губкина.
Фронт Великой Отечественной дважды проходил по этим местам, шахта была затоплена, поселок разрушен. В 1950-е гг. Губкин стал развиваться быстрыми тем­пами. В 1952 г. сдали в эксплуатацию рудник им. Губ­кина, вступила в строй агломерационная фабрика № 1. 23 декабря 1955 г. рабочий поселок был преобразован в город районного подчинения (Старооскольский район). 10 апреля 1959 г. вступил в строй Южно-Коробковский рудник с подземной добычей железистых кварцитов. 26 декабря 1959 г. произведен пуск первой очереди Лебе­динского рудника с открытой добычей богатой железной руды.
В 1960 г. Губкин отнесен к категории городов област­ного подчинения. В 1958 г. в городе был создан филиал Института горного дела АН СССР, 31 августа 1961 г. его реорганизовали в Научно-исследовательский инсти­тут по проблемам Курской магнитной аномалии — НИИКМА им. Л. Д. Шевякова. При институте открыт музей истории развития КМА.
В Губкине — мощный Лебединский горно­обогатительный комбинат,    комбинат «КМА руда», швейная и обувная фабрики, хлебозавод,
мясокомбинат и молокозавод. В 1965 г. открыт филиал Всесоюзного заочного политехнического института.
В городе издаются две газеты. «Знамя Ильича» — городская газета, орган Губкинского горкома КПСС и городского Совета народных депутатов, выходит с 1 ян­варя 1974 г. Объем — 1 печ. л., тираж (1988 г.) 17,5 тыс. экз., периодичность — 4 раза в неделю. «Ле­нинский путь» — районная газета, орган Губкинского райкома КПСС и районного Совета народных депутатов, основана в феврале 1935 г., объем — 1 печ. л., тираж (1988 г.) 8,1 тыс. экз.
