Цели татарских набегов

Главной целью любого татарского набега был захват до­бычи: пленных (полона) и скота, поэтому крупные татарские отряды обязательно стремились проникнуть в густонаселен­ные районы. Цель набегов определяла и тактику. Стремясь захватить полон, а не территорию, татары избегали боевых столкновений, не оставались подолгу в одном месте, спешили уйти с добычей. Некоторых, наиболее ценных полонянников татары увозили на конях, всех остальных гнали, как скот. Это был страшный, неприкрытый грабеж южных районов России. По подсчету А. А. Новосельского, в течение первой половины XVII в. было уведено татарами в полон 150—200 тысяч русских людей, причем А. А. Новосельский добавляет, что эти цифры являются минимальными.
Татары,    как правило, не использовали    полонянников в своем хозяйстве, а продавали «за море», главным образом в Турцию. Очень выгодно было татарам получить за полонянника выкуп, который иногда достигал  нескольких сот рублей.
Отдельные татарские набеги предпринимались непосред­ственно по распоряжению крымского хана, а иногда и турец­кого султана, так как Крымское ханство находилось в вас­сальной зависимости от Турции. Нередко небольшие татар­ские отряды действовали самостоятельно. Но для русского населения южной окраины эта разница не имела принципи­ального значения. Населению приходилось самому бороться с татарами. Служилые люди и крестьяне выходили на пашню с оружием, скрывались от татар в лесах и небольших дере­вянных острожках, смело вступали с врагом в бой, отбивали захваченных в плен родных и близких, жителей своего и со­седних уездов.
С территории Украины, находившейся в составе польско-литовского государства, татары в первой половине XVII в. уводили еще больше полонянников, чем из России. Но можно ли считать, как пишет в связи с этим А. А. Новосельский, что «московская оборонительная система значительно ослабляла эффективность татарских нападений и оправдывала свое назначение и затраты на нее государственных средств»? По нашему мнению, до строительства Белгородской черты до­стоинства «московской оборонительной системы» были весь­ма сомнительны и заметны только в сравнении с почти пол­ным отсутствием таковой в Польше. Сторожевая служба и выдвижение полков дворянской конницы в район Оки были малой толикой того, что могло сделать Русское государст­во для защиты населения южной окраины от татар. Прави­тельство даже не платило денежного жалованья гарнизонам южных городов — приборным служилым людям, которые слу­жили за право пользования небольшим участком пустовав­шей до этого земли. Эта «система» по сути дела переклады­вала всю тяжесть борьбы с татарами на плечи населения южной окраины. В 20-х годах XVII в., когда Воронеж, Белго­род, Оскол существовали уже по 30—40 лет, полки дворян­ской конницы ни разу не выдвигались к этим городам, а про­должали выстраиваться в тылу, недалеко от Оки.
Пока интересы большинства бояр и дворян, владевших землями и крестьянами в центре России, серьезно не затра­гивались татарскими набегами, существующая «система» борьбы с татарами устраивала русское правительство, отра­жавшее в целом взгляды господствующего класса. Не раз царское правительство бросало население юга на произвол судьбы.
Для подтверждения достоинств государственной системы борьбы с татарами А. А. Новосельский упоминает случаи ос­вобождения русскими воинами больших групп полонянников, которых татары угоняли в Крым. «В 1632 г. воевода И. Вель­яминов освободил в пределах Новосильского уезда,— пишет он,— 2700 полонянников. В 1634 г. орловский воевода Д. Колтовский освободил недалеко от Орловского городища 650 че­ловек полона». Но разве воеводы своими собственными си­лами освобождали русских пленных? Или правительство вы­деляло им для этого специальные отряды? Нет. Пленников освобождали мелкие служилые люди южных уездов, выхо­дившие на бой с татарами под официальным командованием воевод. Они отбивали у татар своих братьев, жен, детей. Сам А. А. Новосельский приводит многочисленные примеры этой подлинно народной борьбы населения юга России с тата­рами.
