Деревянные стены на Белгородской черте

Деревянные стены имели на Белгородской черте широкое распространение, причем существовало четыре основных типа таких стен:
1) рубленые стены с обламами,
2) стоячий острог с обламами,
3) стоячий острог без обламов,
4) косой острог.
В первом случае при строительстве рубленой стены в осно­ву клалась хорошо известная и сейчас конструктивная систе­ма прямоугольного сруба, образуемого горизонтальными, по­ложенными друг на друга и соединенными в углах бревнами. Такая конструкция деревянной стены употреблялась, как пра­вило, при строительстве городов, поэтому сделанная из сру­бов с горизонтальными бревнами стена считалась построен­ной «по-городовому». Толщина бревен (и при этом, и при других методах строительства стен) составляла в тонком конце 5—6 вершков (22—26 см). Иногда срубы складывались и из бревен толщиной в 7—8 вершков, но использовать бревна тоньше 5 вершков (в тонком конце) запрещалось. Лес при­менялся дубовый. Соединенные между собой срубы-клетки со­ставляли стену. В Воронеже ширина такой стены, построен­ной в 1671 г., равнялась сажени с четвертью или 2,6 м, высота стены зависела от ее назначения и, как правило, не­много превышала 2 сажени.
Рубленые стены были довольно прочными, но для их соо­ружения требовалось значительно больше леса и времени, чем для стен, состоящих из вертикальных бревен. Прочность стен в условиях борьбы с татарской конницей не являлась самым важным качеством, поэтому на Белгородской черте данный метод строительства стен применялся мало. В 1669г. из 25 городов Белгородской черты рубленые стены имели лишь 5: Карпов, Короча, Яблонов, Усерд, Коротояк. Во всех пяти перечисленных городах рубленая стена имела обламы. Облам — это выступ, навес над основной стеной, прикрытый снаружи еще одной защитной стенкой из нескольких рядов бревен или брусьев. Для устройства обламов брёвна, лежав­шие в срубе перпендикулярно к осевой линии стены, выпу­скались наружу на определенной высоте. На стенах обычно имелись бойницы или, как их называют источники XVI1 в.,— «бои». В обламах, кроме бойниц, могли быть отверстия в полу.
Самой распространенной на Белгородской черте конструк­цией деревянной стены был стоячий острог с обламами. Глав­ную часть конструкции составлял плотный ряд вертикально стоящих бревен. Длина бревен равнялась обычно 3 саженям, причем бревно закапывалось в землю на 1 сажень. При ис­пользовании бревен толщиной в 5 вершков (22 см) на каж­дую сажень стены требовалось 10 вертикально стоящих бре­вен. Острожная стена скреплялась изнутри поперечным го­ризонтальным бревном, а также железными скобами или де­ревянными «иглами».
Для устройства над острожной стеной обламов на расстоянии около 1 сажени от стены (внутри, со стороны защит­ников крепости) вкапывались в землю вертикальные столбы из расчета: 1 столб против каждого десятого столба стены.
Эти столбы соединялись короткими, горизонтально располо­женными бревнами с основной стеной в двух ярусах. Верх­ние короткие бревна назывались обламными связями, они. выходили над острожной стеной и поддерживали навес — облам, состоявший обычно из трех рядов бревен. Нижние-короткие бревна, представлявшие собой, как и обламные свя­зи, перпендикуляры к плоскости стены, крепились в отвер­стиях— проушинах и назывались проушинами. На проуши­ны клались горизонтальные — обычно осиновые — пластины, таким образом вдоль стены устраивались мостки, называемые «кроватями». Для подъема на кровати использовались лест­ницы. Бойницы располагались обычно в два ряда. Из верхних бойниц вели огонь стрелки, находившиеся на кроватях, из нижних — стоявшие на земле.
По сравнению с рубленой стеной острожная стена с обламами имела ряд преимуществ. Для ее сооружения требова­лось почти в два раза меньше леса, чем при постройке рубленой стены. Защитники крепости легко подходили к бой­ницам. Недостатком такой стены была ее небольшая проч­ность Стены с обламами, построенные в пределах города, часто имели тесовые односкатные крыши. Методом стоячего острога с обламами было построено большинство городских деревянных стен на Белгородской черте, таким же способом были построены стены почти всех стоялых острожков. Стоя­чий острог без обламов и «косой» (наклонный) острог, так­же не имевший обламов, употреблялись реже, обычно в ка­честве полевых укреплений; мы их видим у концов земляных валов, на берегах рек, лесных полянах.
Нам приходится довольно часто делать небольшие отступ­ления в область терминологии. Сделаем такое отступление и сейчас. Вслед за документами XVII в. мы употребляем слово «острог в двух значениях: это и стена, составленная из вер­тикальных бревен, и территория, укрепление, обнесенное та­кой стеной (острог, острожек). Термин «стоячий острог» го­ворит о конструкции стены (противоположность — косой); термин «стоялый острог» — о временном характере пребывания, жизни в нем (противоположность — жилой).
