Засеки, валы, тайники и плетни

Остальные применяемые на Белгородской черте деревян­ные укрепления не получили большого распространения. Из­редка устанавливались одиночные «столбцы», которые всегда различаются в документах от надолб Так, вокруг г. Усерда за рвом, стояли столбцы в 3 ряда и надолбы в 1 ряд. Во рву или около рва устанавливался частокол или «частик», встречались плетни (плетеные стены), засыпанные землею.
В лесах на берегах рек Ворсклы, Тихой Сосны, Воронежа кое-где устроены были лесные завалы — засеки.
По сравнению с деревянными стенами земляные валы являлись значительно более прочными и долговременными сооружениями Для большой устойчивости земляные валы об­кладывались дерном, облицовывались дубовыми бревнами, причем, дубовый «ослон» по типу острожной стены мог иметь обламы; применялись и специальные дренажные устройства (например, деревянные трубы сквозь вал для стока воды) Земляные валы тянулись вдоль Белгородской черты более чем на 100 км.
Обнесенные со всех четырех сторон земляным валом тер­ритории, где могли находиться воины, назывались «земляны­ми городками» Такие городки располагались через опреде­ленные расстояния у земляных валов В них обычно уста­навливались деревянные башни. Небольшие земляные город­ки иногда назывались «земляными башнями» В четырех го­родах Белгородской черты (Белгород, Яблонов, Болховец, Нежегольск) земляные валы являлись важной частью город­ских укреплений; по терминологии XVII в. в этих городах имелся «земляной город» Земляные валы использовались, здесь в сочетании с деревянными стенами и конструкциями, которые могли устанавливаться либо на валу (например — туры в Белгороде), либо рядом с валом (рубленая стена в Яблонове). Очень распространены были рвы, которые встре­чаются буквально повсюду.
Почти во всех городах Белгородской черты существовали тайники, считавшиеся необходимым атрибутом средневековой крепости Тайник представлял собой наклонный подземный ход из крепости. В простейшем случае это был ров, покрытый бревнами в один-два наката, на дне которого располагались ступени Сохранился чертеж коротоякского тайника. Ши­рина его, как видно по масштабу,— полторы сажени, высо та — сажень Встречались и более широкие подземные ходы, так тайник из Хотмыжска к р Ворскле имел ширину в две сажени. Длина тайников колебалась в пределах 80—150 м
Деревянные и земляные укрепления Белгородской, черты принципиально не отличались от аналогичных укреплений других «черт» — Симбирской, Закамской, создававшихся примерно в то же время Различные типы укреплений выби­рались в соответствии с особенностями местности, характе­ром почвы, стратегическим положением района, тактическими и техническими возможностями противника. Нецелесообраз­ные, неудачные конструкции отбрасывались самой жизнью, удобные — сохранялись и возобновлялись вплоть до XVIII в., до потери Белгородской чертой ее военного значения.
