Деревянные башни

Еще более интересными и сложными сооружениями явля­лись деревянные башни. Башни устраивались в городах сре­ди стен, в стоялых острожках, на земляных валах, у надолб. В плане башни Белгородской черты представляли собой либо квадрат, либо правильный шестиугольник. Стены башни всегда рубились «по-городовому», методом сруба, башни обычно выступали за линию стены. Наличие башен намного усиливало оборону крепости. В них размещалась артиллерия. Башни использовались и для наблюдения за врагом. Башни, состояли из закрытых, отделенных друг от друга этажей, ко­торых обычно было два или три Иногда верхние этажи де­лались «теплыми», в этом случае между бревнами проклады­вался мох и в башне устанавливалась печь Пол каждого эта­жа назывался мостом. Так в трехэтажной башне было три моста: нижний, средний и верхний. Над мостами прорезались бойницы и амбразуры для пушек. Этажи соединялись лестни­цами. Высота большинства башен составляла 15—20 м, но были башни-великаны высотой более 40 м. Для строитель­ства башен требовался более длинный дубовый лес.
Вот, например, расчет бревен для одной башни Усмани, составленный в 1645 г. Башня в плане представляла квадрат со стороной в 4 сажени. На 40 венцов сруба шло 160 четырех­саженных бревен; обламы имели 5 венцов — для них понадо­билось 20 бревен длиной почти в 5 саженей. На два моста по­надобилось 80 бревен. Всего, таким образом, на башню требовалось 260 больших дубовых бревен. Кроме того, над обла­мами крепились «решетины», поддерживавшие тесовую кры­шу, на них был сделан «караульный чердак» — помещение для наблюдателя-караульщика.
В некоторых местах при строительстве Белгородской чер­ты не хватало дубовых деревьев, и мы встретимся при опи­сании черты с сосновыми башнями, но это было редкостью. Башни бывали проезжие и глухие Проезд через двойные во­рота устраивался в нижнем этаже проезжей башни.
Иногда на земле устраивались срубные конструкции, на­зываемые «тарасами» Тарасы составляли в плане либо прямоугольник, либо треугольник, либо параллелограмм. Они могли засыпаться землей. Тарасы предназначались для укрепления изнутри высоких стен, они, как мы увидим даль­ше, заменяли земляные насыпи на валах Белгородской чер­ты в местах возможных размывов. Изредка тарасы, засыпан­ные землею, являлись и самостоятельными укреплениями.
