Сторожевая служба

Сторожевая служба была опасным и трудным делом, тре­бовала от рядовых ее исполнителей мужества, смекалки, вы­носливости. Организованная в 70—80-х годах XVI в. сразу по­трем линиям (общерусские сторожевые посты, станицы из го­родов, сторожи из городов), она сыграла немалую роль и в предупреждении внезапных татарских набегов, и в деле за­крепления за Россией огромных пространств незаселенного или почти незаселенного «поля». Она исторически подгото­вила возникновение «на поле» русских городов в конце XVI в.
Однако уже в XVI в. стал чувствоваться принципиальный недостаток сторожевой службы. Она предназначалась для того, чтобы предупредить о движении врага, но не отразить его. Недаром сторожевая служба «на поле» обязательно со­единялась с выдвижением войск к Оке. Несмотря на доволь­но четкую организацию сторожевой службы, хорошие боевые и профессиональные качества русских сторожей и станични­ков, татарские нападения не прекращались, и в 70—90-х го­дах XVI в. крымские и ногайские татары по-прежнему про­никали в центр России.
Во время польско-шведской интервенции начала XVII в. на несколько лет пришла в упадок общегосударственная си­стема борьбы с татарами, в том числе и сторожевая служба. Крымские и ногайские татары чувствовали себя хозяевами положения, подолгу оставались в русских землях для гра­бежа и даже «жили без выхода». Полки дворянской кон­ницы не выдвигались на Оку, борьбу с татарами вело только само население. После 1618 г. начинается период относи­тельного «затишья» на юге, и документы 20-х годов XVII в. рисуют восстановленную систему сторожевой службы.
Сохранилась подробная роспись сторож и станиц, высы­лавшихся из южных городов в 1623 г. По этой росписи мы хорошо можем представить себе схему расположения сторож в районе будущей Белгородской черты, пути станичных разъ­ездов из полевых городов.
15 сторож располагалось вокруг Белгорода, окружая за­селенную часть Белгородского уезда. Три из них стояли за­паднее города у Муравской степной дороги. Сторожа, распо­ложенная северо-восточнее Белгорода у верховьев речек Кореня и Корочи, следила за Изюмской дорогой. Поблизости от Изюмской степной дороги располагалась и крайняя юго-восточная сторожа, которая стояла «за белогородскими за крайними деревнями» на р. Нежеголи. На донецких вер­ховьях между Белгородом и Курском располагались совмест­ные белгородско - курские сторожи. Несколько сторож нахо­дилось у самого города; как видно из росписи, не исключа­лась возможность, что татары «пойдут из Руси».
Белгородские сторожи состояли из трех-четырех человек, а одна, расположенная на городском поле «у Везеницкой дуб­ровы», даже из двух. Сторожа стояли «в день и в ночь», и это можно понять. Сторожи находились у города, у белгород­ских сел и деревень; было просто некогда заходить в тыл та­тарским отрядам, изучать их следы, как предписывал устав 1571 г. Большинство сторож стало уже не далекими постами разведчиков-наблюдателей, а обычной охраной.
Зато белгородские станицы в 20-х годах XVII в. еще со­храняли общерусское значение. Их маршруты совпадали в основном с маршрутами прежних путивльских станиц XVI в. Один путь станичных разъездов проходил вдоль Муравской степной дороги, к русской границе — к верховьям рек Орели и Самары. Второй — вдоль Северского Донца, туда, «где был Борисовский город», и далее до устья р. Айдара. Каждая ста­ница состояла из 10 человек, разъезды начинались несколько раньше, чем в XVI в.,— с 25 марта. Один маршрут обслужи­вался 20 постоянно сформированными станицами; первые 10 станиц разъезжали весной и в начале лета, другие десять — в конце лета и осенью. Всего в Белгороде было 40 ста­ниц, в станичной службе числилось, как мы уже отмечали, 400 человек. В отличие от сторожей станичники были, выра­жаясь современным языком, профессионалами. Станичная служба являлась видом постоянной военной деятельности части населения, как стрелецкая или пушкарская.
Кроме Белгорода, в 1623 г. еще один город «польской украйны» — Оскол высылал в степь станицы. Путь оскольских станичников лежал от Оскола в юго-восточном направ­лении к Каменному броду на р. Тихой Сосне, а затем вдоль Тихой Сосны к Дону. Он был примерно вдвое короче бел­городских маршрутов. Оскольская станица переезжала все разветвления Кальмиусской сакмы. В Осколе было сформи­ровано 20 станиц. Как и в Белгороде, десять станиц ездили в течение первой половины лета, остальные десять — в те­чение второй. В составе каждой станицы был 1 сын бояр­ский, 1 станичный атаман, 2 вожа и 6 рядовых станичников-ездоков.
Вокруг г. Оскола и Оскольского уезда располагалось 13 сторож. Важное значение имела Холковская сторожа, на­ходившаяся к юго-западу от города в верховьях р. Холка у места соединения двух степных татарских дорог — Изюмской и Муравской. Дальние оскольские сторожи у р. Тихой Сосны вели наблюдение за Кальмиусской дорогой. Несколько сто­рож находилось в непосредственной близости от города, в том числе и к северу от него. Южная часть Оскольского уез­да была прикрыта Голубинским лесом, здесь сторож не бы­ло. Некоторой защитой с востока служил Котельский лес.
В расположении воронежских сторож также очень хоро­шо заметно использование природных особенностей местно­сти. В росписи 1623 г. мы находим 18 воронежских сторож. Из них 11 расположены либо у Дона, либо в непосредственной близости от него: они прикрывали Воронежский уезд с юго-запада, запада и северо-запада. Три сторожи расположены были с «ногайской» стороны — сторожа ездили от речки Тавровки к р. Хаве и к «хавским вершинам». С северо-востока Воронежский уезд был надежно прикрыт Усманским бо­ром — сторож здесь мы не находим. Остальные 4 сторожи считались «дальними». Одна из них находилась «на Бетюке у Охматова липяга». Ее место определяется современным с. Ахматовым Тамбовской области в верховьях р. Битюга. Две дальних сторожи располагались на р. Тихой Сосне, одна — у Прогорелого леса (западнее Воронежа). Дальние сторожи названы «совместными»; рядом с воронежскими сторожами здесь были служилые люди из Ряжска, Шацка, Данкова. Епифани, Лебедяни, Ельца, Ливен, Оскола.
Впереди Белгорода, Оскола и Воронежа, составлявших как бы одну линию, находился еще один крайний русский го­род— Валуйки. По росписи 1623 г. вокруг Валуек располага­лось 8 ближних сторож и 2 дальние. В числе «ближних» были три, расположенные на степных курганах к югу и к во­стоку от города. Дальние валуйские сторожи поддержива­ли связь со сторожами, выезжавшими из соседних городов. Одна, располагавшаяся «верх Бурлуков» (северо-восток со­временной Харьковской области) у Изюмской дороги, про­езжала к Волчьим водам и р. Нежеголи, где имелись белго­родские сторожи. Другая от Валуйского леса выезжала к р. Тихой Сосне и Каменному броду, где располагались сто­рожи из Оскола и Воронежа. С 1626 г. дальние валуйские сторожи были заменены станицами.
Из остальных полевых городов — Курска, Ливен, Ельца, Лебедяни высылались свои сторожи. Несколько совместных сторож по-прежнему, как и в XVI в., располагалось на р. Бы­строй Сосне, у татарских бродов.
Интерес представляет для нас расположение сторож в верховьях р. Воронежа и у р. Челновой (притока р. Цны): в этих местах вскоре стала сооружаться Белгородская черта. Здесь мы видим несколько ряжских сторож. «К Хоботу» — в район слияния Лесного и Польного Воронежей — выезжают две ряжские сторожи, на р. Челновой стоит совместная сто­рожа из Ряжска и Данкова, восточнее р. Челновой — совме­стная сторожа из Ряжска и Шацка.
Таким образом, сторожевая служба на юге России к 20-м годам XVII в. проделала определенный путь развития по сравнению с 70-ми годами XVI в. С возникновением городов «на поле» были ликвидированы общерусские сторожевые ба­зы. Можно подметить повышение роли отдельных городов в организации сторожевой службы. Сторожи теперь главным образом окружают города и уезды, а не стоят сплошной линией поперек степи, поперек татарских дорог. Хотя воево­ды южных городов шлют в Разрядный приказ росписи сто­рож, хотя существуют совместные сторожи из нескольких го­родов и сторожевая служба мыслится как единая, общерус­ского оперативного руководства у нее нет. И действительно, из Москвы руководить ею уже практически нельзя — так да­леко выдвинулись в степь русские города и села. Русские войска, расставляемые по традиции на Оке, оказываются в далеком тылу, почти не вступают с татарами в бой, теряют контакт с передовыми сторожами.
В начале 30-х годов XVII в. вновь выявились принципи­альные недостатки сторожевой службы. Мало было предуп­реждать о движении татар, надо было их отражать, причем не на Оке, а на линии крайних русских городов и сел. Раз­ветвленная сеть сторож и станиц не предотвратила крупных татарских вторжений в Россию во время Смоленской войны 1632 — 1634 гг. и в 1643 — 1645 гг. Такие вторжения были предотвращены позже Белгородской чертой. После сооруже­ния Белгородской черты значение сторожевой службы резко снизилось, она стала играть второстепенную роль, иногда организовывалась перед отдельными участками черты.
Хотя значение сторожевой службы менялось на различ­ных этапах и постепенно падало, это была важная и интерес­ная составная часть той большой борьбы, которую вел рус­ский народ в XVI — XVII вв. с крымскими и ногайскими та­тарами.
