Острогожский участок

Следующий, Острогожский участок Белгородской черты начинался сразу же за Осиновым острогом. По данным П. Зиновьева, «от Ольшанского рубежа» и далее «до Песковатого броду» вдоль Тихой Сосны тянулись болота, рос лес Песковатый брод был перекрыт дубовым частиком, который стоял «по берегу реки Сосны в воде». П. Зиновьев замечает, и то частокол поставлен «в 174-м году» и что «тот частик кре­пок»91. П. Зиновьев осматривал частик осенью 1669 г., или в 7178 году по старому русскому летоисчислению. За три с половиной — четыре года дубовые столбы в воде не утратили прочности. Позади частика, параллельно ему по берегу сдела­ны были «кобылины», представляющие собой наклонно вко­панные столбы. Этих укреплений, видимо, было достаточно. Между Песковатым и Полубенским бродами на 2 верстах снова тянулись «топи и болота». Полубенский брод также был перекрыт частиком, поставленным в воде на 26 саженях. Болота и лес по обе стороны Тихой Сосны продолжались и ниже Полубенского брода, вплоть до г. Острогожска. «Летом проезду и проходу здесь не бывает»,— сообщает об этих ме­стах П. Зиновьев.
Острогожск был построен в 1652 г. по близости от впадения в Тихую Сосну речки Острогощи и получил имя по этой реч­ке. Длина крепостных стен, поставленных «по-острожному», составляла, по данным «Описи городов» 1677/78 г., 490 са­женей. Город имел 9 башен, крупнейшей из которых была Московская. Как явствует из строельной книги Острогожска, наблюдатели, находившиеся на Московской башне, видели верховья речек Лиски, Марка и Татарин липяг, расстояние до которого по прямой линии 33 км. В 50—60-х годах суще­ствовал тайный ход из крепости к колодцу, но затем коло­дец «занесло мелом». По сравнению с Ольшанском Остро­гожская крепость имела недостаток. Она была построена не на такой береговой круче, как Ольшанск, а лишь на неболь­шой возвышенности левого берега Тихой Сосны. Более вы­соких мест поблизости не было. Но этот недостаток компен­сировался высотой одной из острогожских башен.
В 1677 г. в Острогожске насчитывалось 70 детей бояр­ских городовой службы, 38 стрельцов, 36 станичников, 18 пуш­карей. Большую часть гарнизона составляли черкасы — укра­инские переселенцы, выполнявшие городовую службу. Слу­жилых черкас в городе было 277. Гарнизон располагал 10 пушками. В Острогожске имелись и посадские люди — 42 человека. Пригородные острогожские слободы защища­лись надолбами, которые в 1669 г. были заменены земляным валом и рвом. Этот вал протяженностью примерно в 1,6 км сохранился и в XVIII в.
На Острогожском участке мы встречаемся с интересной попыткой включить в Белгородскую черту древние оборони­тельные сооружения. Поперек р. Острогощи между лесами за много столетий до сооружения Белгородской черты был на­сыпан земляной вал длиной более 1 км; документы середины XVII в. называют его «старинным валом». В конце 40-х го­дов XVII в., когда эти места относились к Коротоякской зо­не, вал был подправлен, среди него поставлены две башни, и лесу устроены засеки. Вал совместно с лесными засеками закрывал дорогу татарам в том случае, если бы они перепра­вились через Тихую Сосну.
После строительства Острогожска вал оказался позади главных укреплений. У П. Зиновьева возникло сомнение: включать этот вал в число укреплений Белгородской черты или нет? П. Зиновьев спросил об этом у местных жителей. «По сказке острогощан жилецких всяких чинов людей,— пи­шет он,— тот вал и засека стали в черте». Жители Остро­гожска правильно поняли суть Белгородской черты как та­кой укрепленной линии, которая могла состоять из несколь­ких линий, иметь передовые и тыловые укрепления.
На Острогожском участке Белгородской черты существо­вали и передовые укрепления за р. Тихой Сосной. Таких укрепленных пунктов было два. Первый из них прикрывал подходы к г. Острогожску с юга. «За рекою Сосною против города на крымской стороне, в займище, от города в версте, меж болот и лесов поставлен острог дубовый»,— сообщает П. Зиновьев. Дубовая стена высотой около 4 м тянулась почти на полкилометра (225 саженей) «от лесу до лесу и то­пей». В середине стены располагался деревянный городок. В нем находилась башня с караульной вышкой и проезжими воротами. «От Острогожска в трех верстах» (6—6,5 км) на­ходился «Отъезжий городок», устроенный на Лубянском кур­гане и выполнявший роль второго передового наблюдатель­ного и опорного пункта. Здесь стояла башня, окруженная де­ревянной стеной высотой в 2 сажени. Сменный гарнизон Отъезжего городка вел наблюдение за степью, а также в слу­чае необходимости мог открыть огонь с тыла или фланга по подходящим к Острогожску татарам.
В 4 км ниже Острогожска на левом берегу Тихой Сосны был построен на бывшем татарском перелазе Истобный ост­рожек. Берега Тихой Сосны между Острогожском и Истобным острожком заросли лозняком, были топкими и болоти­стыми, летом практически непроходимыми. Истобный остро­жек представлял собой огороженную дубовой стеной терри­торию в 16 кв. саженей, перед ним на берегу Тихой Сосны установлен был «частик в колодах» на 214 саженях. Ниже Истобного острожка до следующего укрепления — Рыбинско­го острожка вновь тянулись болота. Высота стены Рыбин­ского острога была такая же, как и в Истобном остроге — «две сажени без чети» (3,7 м), но огорожена стеной здесь была значительно большая территория — 49 кв. саженей. По обе стороны от Рыбинского острожка, к лесу и болотам, стояли надолбы.
Любопытно, что еще в 1668 г. Истобный и Рыбинский стоялые остроги находились в военной зоне г. Коротояка. П. Зиновьев же осенью 1669 г. включает их в военную зону Острогожска102. Расширение Острогожского участка Белго­родской черты в восточном направлении и отнесение острож­ков к Острогожску произошло, видимо, летом 1669 г. Оно связано с размежеванием Острогожского и Коротоякского уездов, которое проводилось в связи с земельными спорами между острогожскими черкасами и детьми боярскими Коро­тоякского уезда.
Протяженность Острогожского участка Белгородской чер­ты, даже после расширения его в сторону Коротояка, была невелика и составляла примерно 20 км. Большую часть уча­стка занимали естественные препятствия для татарской кон­ницы— болота, сплошные заросли ивняка вдоль Тихой Сосны. Острогожский участок шел по Тихой Сосне, по ее левому бе­регу. Существовала и вторая, тыловая линия обороны, посте­пенно утрачивавшая свое значение. На Острогожском уча­стке, непосредственно «на черте» находилось два стоялых острога, были и два передовых острожка за Тихой Сосной.
