Красная Яруга

Красная Яруга — рабочий поселок (с 1958 г.) в Ракитянском районе, 7,2 тыс. жителей (1988 г.), в 1935 — начале 1960 гг. — центр Краснояружского района.
Название от слов: красный — красивый и яруга — овраг, балка. В первой половине XIX в. Красная Яруга была крепостной слободой. В 1873 г. здесь был постро­ен сахарный завод. В «Полном географическом описа­нии нашего Отечества» (под ред. В. П. Семенова) со­общалось, что Краснояружский свеклосахарный завод перерабатывает в год по 400 тыс. берковцев свеклы (берковец — 12 пудов. — Б. О.). Все процессы сахаро­варения на предприятии, принадлежавшем местному помещику, велись вручную. В советское время производ­ство механизировали, и уже в годы первых пятилеток мощность завода возросла впятеро.
Во время войны завод был разрушен, и восстанавли­вать его признали нецелесообразным. В 1949 г. заверши­лось сооружение нового завода, который стал выпускать не только сахар-песок, но и рафинад.
