Грайворон

Грайворон — город, центр Грайворонского района, расположен в устье реки Грайворонки, впадающей в Ворсклу, в 15 км от железнодорожной станции Хотмыжск (на линии Льгов—Харьков) и в 78 км от Белгорода (ав­тобусное сообщение).
Слобода Грайворон основана в 1678 г. и получила имя от речки и урочища Грайвороны (это название из­вестно со времен Киевской Руси и свидетельствует о былых больших скоплениях птиц в урочище). После царского указа от 23 марта 1838 г. Грайворон стал уезд­ным городом. До революции — 2 кирпичных завода и 3 кустарные мастерские с 62 рабочими, 17 литейных за­ведений и на весь город один врач с двумя фельдше­рами.
Советская власть в Грайвороне и уезде установлена в январе 1918 г. Летом 1919 г. здесь был создан Грайворонский революционный полк (в Грайвороне установлен памятник его бойцам). С 1928 по 1965 г. Грайворон был районным центром.
В 1943 г. за Грайворон шли кровопролитные бои. Первый раз город освободили 16 февраля, но через ме­сяц советским войскам пришлось его оставить. 6— 7 августа — в ходе Курской битвы — одно из подразделений 5-го танкового Кантемировского корпуса, фор­сировав Ворсклу, выбило фашистских оккупантов из Грайворона.
В Грайвороне работают кирпичный завод (с 1909 г.) и завод по ремонту электрооборудования, пищекомбинат, сырзавод, хлебокомбинат, Дом пионеров, городская биб­лиотека им. А. С. Пушкина и детская библиотека, об­ластной детский ревматологический санаторий.
Уроженцами Грайворона являются выдающийся уче­ный, инженер и изобретатель В. Г. Шухов, ученый-геолог А. К. Болдырев, писатели С. Т. Славутинскии и М. Маискии. В 90-х гг. XIX в. в Грайвороне жил и работал известный русский писатель Скиталец.
