Вейделевка

Вейделевка — поселок городского типа, центр Вейделевского района (с июля 1928 г.). Расположен на реке Ураева в 27 км от железнодорожной станции Валуйки. Почти 6 тыс. жителей (в 1988 г.). В прошлом — крупное крепостное селение в Валуйском уезде.
Вейделевская волостная организация РКП (б) была создана 12 декабря 1918 г.
В Вейделевке родились М. П. Костенко — академик, Герой Социалистического Труда, лауреат Ленин­ской и Государственной премий СССР, В. Н. Любименко — физиолог растений, член-корреспондент АН СССР. Вейделевский район — родина трех Героев Со­ветского Союза: артиллериста А. А. Дементьева, саперов И. И. Сердюкова и Ф. Е. Тарасова.
В поселке находятся завод сухого обезжиренного мо­лока, мехлесхоз, рыбхоз. В Вейделевском районе распо­ложена опытная станция Всесоюзного НИИ масличных культур, образованная в советское время на базе Вейделевского опытного поля, которое существовало с 1914 г. С середины 1930-х гг. это научно-исследовательское учреждение специализировалось на селекции подсолнеч­ника. В 1933 г. здесь были выведены сорта, которые по­лучили широкое распространение в Центральном Черно­земье и на Украине. В 1953 г. был селекционирован один из лучших высокомасличных сортов подсолнечника «Зеленка-368», он экспонировался на международной вы­ставке в Брюсселе. В 1960-е гг. был передан колхозам и совхозам новый скороспелый сорт «Чернянка-66». Большая заслуга в выведении высокопродуктивных со­ртов подсолнечника принадлежит селекционеру Н. И.  Прохорову.
В Вейделевской районной типографии печатается га­зета «Пламя», орган Вейделевского районного комитета КПСС и районного Совета народных депутатов. Объ­ем — 1 печ. л., тираж (в 1988 г.) 6,5 тыс. экз. Выходит с 1 ноября 1931г., тогда называлась «За новую жизнь». Под названием «Пламя» стала выходить в 1960-е гг.
