Турчанинов Николай Степанович

Турчанинов Николай Степанович — ботаник, путе­шественник. Родился в 1796 г. в слободе Никитовка (ныне в Красногвардейском районе) в семье мелкопо­местного дворянина. Получив начальное образование дома, в 12-летнем возрасте был определен в Воронежское народное училище. В 1810 г. поступил в Харьковскую гимназию, из которой перешел вольнослушателем на физико-математический факультет университета. После окончания Харьковского университета служил чиновни­ком в разных ведомствах в Петербурге, Иркутске, Крас­ноярске.
Еще в родной Никитовке Н. Турчанинов собрал пер­вый гербарий. Увлечение ботаникой окрепло в годы уче­бы в гимназии и университете, продолжалось и в се­верной столице. Вскоре вышла первая научная работа— «Список растений, находящихся в окрестностях Петер­бурга».
После перевода в 1828 г. из столицы в Иркутск Турчанинов предпринял одно за другим ряд путешествий по Восточной Сибири: обследовал побережье Байкала и сибирских рек, Даурию. В это время он познакомился со ссыльным декабристом В. Ф. Раевским. Ученый не раз гостил у Раевского, жившего с семьей в с. Олонки. В 1830 г. Турчанинова назначили «ученым-путешествен­ником между Алтаем и Восточным океаном» Петербург­ского ботанического сада. Он описал свыше ста новых родов и более тысячи новых видов растений России, Китая, Монголии, Австралии, Индонезии, Филиппин, Южной Америки. Избран членом-корреспондентом Российской академии наук. Главным трудом Турчани­нова явилось фундаментальное исследование «Байкало-Даурская флора».
В 1845 г. ученый покинул Сибирь, переехав сначала в Таганрог, а затем в Харьков. В Харькове продолжал научные занятия. Умер 26 декабря 1863 (7 января 1864) г. В Институте ботаники АН УССР в Киеве хра­нится гербарий Турчанинова (около 50 тыс. видов ра­стений), являющийся национальной ценностью.
