Новый Оскол

Новый Оскол — город, центр Новооскольского райо­на, железнодорожная станция на линии Касторное—Валуйки, в 254 км к востоку от Белгорода. Основан в 1647 г. во время создания Белгородской черты на левом берегу Оскола при впадении в него речки Беленькой (Белый Колодезь) как город-крепость Ца­рев-Алексеев. Через восемь лет получил название, сох­раненное доныне, — Новый Оскол. В 1650—1680-е гг. не раз жестоко страдал от набегов татар. В 1708 г. город был приписан к Киевской, а с 1727 г. — к Белгородской губернии. С 1779 г. — уездный город Кур­ского наместничества (с населением 1484 человека), с 1797 г. — Курской губернии.
Весной 1917 г. в Новом Осколе революционно на­строенными рабочими и солдатами был создан уездный продкомитет для справедливого распределения хлеба и других продуктов. 10 декабря 1917 г. организационно оформилась Новооскольская городская организация РСДРП (б). 27 декабря на уездном съезде Советов был избран большевистский Совет рабочих, солдатских и крестьянских депутатов. Первым председателем испол­кома стал большевик Д. П. Величко. Активно боролись за Советскую власть в Новом Осколе и уезде коммуни­сты Д. Я. Обыденко, А. С. Перевертайло и другие.
За годы первых пятилеток новооскольцы построили и реконструировали крупный кирпичный завод, мель­комбинат, маслозавод и хлебоприемный пункт. В 1935 г. принял первых учащихся техникум механизации сель­ского хозяйства (теперь совхоз-техникум).
Новооскольцы гордятся замечательными земляками: легендарным подводником А. М. Коняевым, воена­чальником А. Л. Бондаревым, летчиком-испытате­лем А. Г. Васильченко, архитектором А. В: Буниным. Одиннадцать уроженцев Новооскольского района удостоены звания Героя Советского Союза, четыре — Героя Социалистического Труда.
В городе работают завод железобетонных изделий и кирпичный, мебельная фабрика, комбинат бытового об­служивания, мелькомбинат, консервный и молочный за­воды. Имеются совхоз-техникум, учебно-курсовой комби­нат, шесть общеобразовательных школ, школа рабочей молодежи, музыкальная и детско-юношеская спортив­ная школа, семь библиотек с общим книжным фондом, превышающим 206 тысяч экземпляров, Дом культуры, кинотеатр.
В Новом Осколе издается газета «Вперед» — орган районного комитета КПСС и районного Совета народных депутатов. Объем — 1 печ. л., тираж (в 1988 г.) 11,6 тыс. экз. Газета основана в августе 1921 г., тогда в городе начал выходить «Красный вестник» — орган Новооскольского уисполкома и укома РКП (б); с мая 1923 г. газета получила название «Известия Новоосколь­ского уездного исполнительного комитета Советов ра­бочих, крестьянских и красноармейских депутатов и уездного комитета Российской Коммунистической пар­тии большевиков». С 1930 г. выходила районная газета «Красное знамя», в 1960-е гг. она получила сегодняшнее название.
