Костенский участок

Небольшой по размерам Костенский участок Белгород­ской черты тянулся по Дону примерно на 12 км в пределах современных сел Александров, Костенок и Рудкина. Здесь правый берег Дона не так обрывист и крут, как на Борщев-ском и Коротоякском участках. Но и тут татарской коннице далеко не везде, даже при отсутствии защитников черты, можно было преодолеть водную преграду, переправиться с левого берега Дона на правый. В донской пойме на левом берегу в этом месте есть заболоченные места, много озер, связанных с Доном протоками, мешающих приблизиться к Дону. Все же и здесь татары нашли подходы к Дону, броды, места переправ. Документы XVII в. отмечают наличие двух татарских перелазов через Дон на Костенском участке.
Урочище Костенки, несомненно, было уже известно воронежцам в конце XVI в., когда бортные ухожьи на берегах Дона давались воронежским казакам вместо половины жа­лованья Здесь, на месте палеолитических стоянок перво­бытного человека, на поверхности земли лежало много ма­монтовых костей. Кости дали название урочищу, урочище — возникшей поблизости деревне В 1640—1641 гг в Костенках жили украинские и белорусские переселенцы, а затем после попытки ухода их из пределов Русского юсуифива здесь появились первые на Белгородской черте поселенные драгу­ны. Городок Костенек был построен в 1642 г. Дубовая острожная стена тянулась в длину на 52 сажени, в ширину — на 49 саженей Крепость представляла собой в  плане прямоугольник, имелась одна башня. В 1676 г., по данным Белгородской сметной книги, в Костенске насчиты­валось 139 детей боярских драгунской службы, 198 драгун, 13 пушкарей. Гарнизон располагал 7 пушками.

Укрепления на Костенском участке Белгородской черты были сосредоточены главным образом в двух местах — у бывших татарских перелазов. Южным укреплением являл­ся сам городок Костенек, обнесенный дубовой острожной сте­ной, рвом, надолбами. Северное укрепление — это «опасный юродок» с башней у с. Рудкина, построенный в 1657г., где посменно находилось 30 драгун. Около него, а также напро­тив— на левом берегу Дона — стояли надолбы. Помимо этих двух хорошо укрепленных пунктов, надолбы общей протяжен­ностью в 500 саженей располагались еще кое-где на берегах Дона, на местах возможных переправ. Северной границей Костенского участка Белгородской черты считался Гремячий колодезь — небольшой ручей, протекавший по террито­рии современного с. Гремячьего.
