Хотмыжский участок

Хотмыжский участок Белгородской черты располагался ближе к дороге татарских вторжений — Муравской сакме, чем соседний — Вольновский. Можно представить себе р. Ворсклу в ее верхнем течении и Муравскую дорогу как две пря­мые линии, сближающиеся к северо-востоку. Чем ближе к вершине этого угла, тем опаснее, напряженнее была жизнь русских людей, пришедших самостоятельно или переведен­ных насильно на берега Ворсклы. На Хотмыжском участке ко времени строительства здесь укрепленной линии было больше татарских «перелазов» с Муравской сакмы через Ворсклу на Бакаев шлях, чем на Вольновском. Если Воль­ный находился в 35—40 км от Муравской сакмы, то Хотмыжск — в 15—20 км. При описании укреплений Хотмыжской зоны все время встречаются упоминания о том, что с правого, высокого берега Ворсклы видна Муравская дорога.
Крайним западным укреплением Хотмыжской зоны яв­лялся стоялый острог на Углицкой горе. Незадолго до осмот­ра П. Зиновьевым укреплений Белгородской черты (1669 г.) острог сгорел, но вскоре, видимо, был построен заново.
Как и в Вольновской зоне, правый берег Ворсклы на Хот­мыжском участке Белгородской черты был высоким и леси­стым. Лес начинался от Углицкой горы и доходил до Рако­вых гор. Поляны укреплены были тарасами и надолбами. В лесу был сделан завал (засека) длиной более 8 км. На­против завала с юга в Ворсклу впадала речка Гравороны. Сейчас при устье этой речки на левом берегу Ворсклы на­ходится современный г. Грайворон.
На Раковых горах стоял второй караульный острожек, окруженный рвом. От острожка лесной завал тянулся на 6 верст, в ширину он имел 30 саженей и заканчивался на Дугиной поляне. От Дугиной поляны завал был «сечен по обе стороны реки Ворскла, с рога на рог». Здесь, на берегу Ворсклы, на самой Белгородской черте, находилось с. Доб­рое. «А то село поселилось того году,— пишет в своем доне­сении П. Зиновьев,— как поставлен город Хотмышской».
В нескольких верстах от с. Доброго позже возникла деревня Тополи, ее отмечает в своем описании Белгородской черты П. Зиновьев. Оттуда шла засека к Избыльному логу, за ним стояли тарасы, за тарасами «к утесу» — надолбы. На горе сделан был еще один лесной завал длиной в версту, доходивший до Кротовой поляны. Оттуда завал шел к Про бойной горе. Здесь у старого татарского перелаза еще в 1640 г. одновременно с Хотмыжской крепостью был построен стоялый острог. Восточнее его шла засека по северному бе­регу Ворсклы, ближе к Хотмыжску засеки находились на обоих берегах реки.
Хотмыжск построен был в 1640 г. на старом Хотмыжском городище, там, где прежде, видимо, существовал древнерус­ский город. До основания г. Хотмыжска это старое горо­дище было хорошо известно русским сторожевым отрядам. Расположенное на мысу коренного берега, образованном до­линой р. Ворсклы и прилегающими к ней оврагами, городи­ще доминировало над окружающей местностью. Крутые скло­ны со стороны речной долины достигают здесь 50-метровой высоты. Хотмыжское городище, единственное из городищ на берегах Ворсклы, названо в «Книге Большому чертежу»; в начале XVII в. оно было, видимо, самым заметным и из­вестным из городищ верхней Ворсклы.
Хотмыжск был несколько больше Вольного. Длина его дубовых стен, поставленных стоячим острогом, составляла 347 саженей. Город имел 2 проезжие башни и 8 глухих. С трех сторон к городской стене примыкали крутые склоны, только с одной стороны — «у передних ворот» — был прорыт ров, за ним стояли в три ряда «столбцы дубовые». К реке Ворскле имелся тайный ход. В 1677 г. в городе насчитыва­лось 280 детей боярских «городовой службы», 85 стрельцов, 65 казаков, 19 пушкарей, 2 воротника. Гарнизон располагал 24 пушками. И древнерусский город и крепость XVII в.
располагались в пределах современного села Хотмыжска Бо­рисовского района Белгородской области.
У Хотмыжска в середине XVII в. устроена была запруда; П. Зиновьев писал в 1669 г., что «прудовая вода от мельни­цы» занимала две версты вверх по реке от города. Дальше вверх по правому берегу Ворсклы вновь шел лес, который продолжался вплоть «до Карповского рубежа». В лесу была сделана засека. Границей между Хотмыжской и Карповской военными зонами являлся Мощинский Колодезь.
Длина Хотмыжского участка Белгородской черты состав­ляла примерно 45 км (с учетом основных изгибов реки). Весь участок проходил по р. Ворскле. Как и в военной зоне Воль­ного, естественные препятствия имели здесь большее значе­ние, чем искусственные инженерные сооружения. Оба эти вида препятствий для татарской конницы, как и повсюду на Белгородской черте, дополняли друг друга. В военной зоне Хотмыжска находилось три караульных острожка. Все они располагались ниже Хотмыжска по течению Ворсклы, на крутом правом берегу, у прежних татарских перелазов.
