Ватутин Николай Федорович

Ватутин Николай Федорович — генерал армии (1943 г.), Герой Советского Союза (1965 г., посмертно). Родился 16 декабря 1901 г. в дер. Чепухино под Валуйками в крестьянской семье. После окончания школы учился в Уразовском коммерческом училище. Весной 1920 г. добровольцем ушел в Красную Армию. Его служ­ба началась в Харькове, а осенью того же 1920 г. он поступил в Полтавскую пехотную школу, после окончания которой стал кадровым командиром. В феврале 1921 г. Ватутин вступил в Коммунистическую партию.
В 1929 г. окончил Военную академию им. М. В. Фрун­зе, в 1937 — Военную академию Генерального штаба. С 1940 г. — начальник Оперативного управления, за­тем — первый заместитель начальника Генштаба, в июне 1941 г. — генерал-лейтенант. В годы Великой Оте­чественной войны Н. Ф. Ватутин — начальник штаба Северо-Западного фронта (с июня 1941 г.), заместитель начальника Генштаба (с мая 1942 г.), командующий войсками Воронежского (июль—октябрь 1942 и март— октябрь 1943 г.), Юго-Западного (октябрь 1942 — март 1943 г.), 1-го Украинского (октябрь 1943 — март 1944 г.) фронтов. Войска под командованием Ватутина сражались в Сталинградской и Курской битвах, участ­вовали в освобождении Белгородчины, Левобережной Украины, провели Острогожско-Россошанскую, Киев­скую, Корсунь-Шевченковскую и другие операции.
29 февраля 1944 г. Ватутин был тяжело      ранен и 15 апреля скончался в Киеве.
Награжден орденами Ленина, Красного Знамени, Су­ворова 1-й степени, Кутузова 1-й степени. Н. Ф. Ватутин похоронен в Киеве, на могиле установлен памятник (скульптор Е. В. Вучетич, архитектор Я. В. Белопольский). На родине талантливого полководца, в доме, где он родился, — мемориальный музей. В селе установлен памятник замечательному земляку. Его имя присвоено местному колхозу, ряду других хозяйств области, а так­же проспекту в Белгороде и улицам в Валуйках и Уразово.
