Машкин Алексей Степанович

Машкин Алексей Степанович — учитель, краевед, этнограф. Родился в 1816 г. в с. Большое Городище Корочанского уезда (ныне Шебекинского района) в семье безземельного обедневшего дворянина. Учился в Корочанском городском училище. В 1840 г. в Харьковской семинарии экстерном сдал экзамены на звание учителя. Три года преподавал в Корочанском приходском учи­лище, затем перевелся в Обоянь. Учительскую работу сочетал с собиранием фольклора. Вел постоянную пере­писку с В. И. Далем и Русским географическим общест­вом. Исследователем-энтузиастом были подготовлены десятки статей и сборников пословиц и поговорок, ска­зок и рассказов, анекдотов и прибауток, свадебных и хороводных песен, записей обычаев и обрядов, примет и предрассудков.
Собранные Машкиным этнографические материалы не утратили научной ценности, ссылки на них встреча­ются в «Словаре русских народных говоров», в научных трудах по русской диалектологии. Умер в январе 1904 г. в Обояни.
