Белгородская черта

Белгородская черта — оборонительная линия (почти 800 км), система городов-крепостей, земляных валов, лесных засек и других укреплений на южной границе Русского государства для защиты от набегов крымских и ногайских татар. Создание черты началось в 30-е годы XVII в., в нее были включены построенные значительно раньше Воронеж и Белгород. Название оборонитель­ной линии дал Белгород, в этом городе находилось уп­равление Белгородской чертой. В годы строительства черты на белгородской земле вырос целый ряд новых городов-крепостей. В 1637 г. — Усерд и Яблонов, 1638 г. — Короча, в 1640 г. — Xотмыжск, в 1646 г. — Болховец.
Летом 1646 г. служилые люди во главе с воеводой В. П. Шереметевым начали строительство новой дере­вянной крепости на месте возведенного в 1644 г. Карповского стоялого острога. К осени на высоком правом бе­регу Ворсклы был срублен деревянный город-крепость Карпов. На карте современной Белгородской области Карпова нет. По словам профессора В. П. Загоровского, «его природные слободы, располагавшиеся к северо-во­стоку от городской стены, превратились в современные селы Казацкое, Драгунское, Стрелецкое в Яковлевском районе».
В следующем, 1647 г. был построен город-крепость Верхососенск (название — от Верхососенского леса, ко­торый сохранился доныне неподалеку от Красногвардей­ского). Заселение Верхососенска проходило медленно и трудно. В 1651 г. в городе-крепости в числе служилых людей было лишь 105 стрельцов, 95 казаков и 28 пушка­рей, затинщиков и воротников.
Позже других, в 1654 г., на правом берегу р. Нежеголь появился небольшой оборонительный городок-кре­пость Нежегольск. Так же, как и расположенный непо­далеку, вблизи Белгорода, Болховец, он был «земляным городом»: место, где строился, было обнесено земляным валом. Нежегольск — последняя из крепостей Белго­родской черты, возведенных на территории нынешней области.
Военно-оборонительное значение Белгородской черты сохранялось до начала XVIII века.
